So it's summer... our schedules are a little crazier which means the kids probably are, too, right? It's so hard to create limits and strict rules when there is not a regular school schedule to fall back on. As parents we vacillate between wanting to keep firm structures, and saying, ahh forget it, it's summer! It's tough. Here are some of my tips to help you get through the next month:
Find the right balance. It's fine if they are on technology all the time or sleeping until noon on some days- it is summer after all! If it feels too out of control or addictive, then step in with some rules. But don't feel guilty that your children are relaxing and enjoying the summer. They deserve it (and so do you).
When it's time to set some new structures, bring the whole family in on the summer rule decisions. Remember, you are a team and the best way to get buy-in (as we all know), is to include everyone in on the decision making. Let them know you want them to enjoy their summer, but you also have a house to keep clean, pets to feed, and chores to complete. So... how should we best do that? What will work best for our family? Let everyone have a say and complete task assignments and a schedule together.
Relax and have fun with them! Play video games, watch some YouTube together- do the things THEY like. Join them in their activities and it will bring you closer together!
Don't forget! When you get back from vacation you need to REMIND everyone of the routine! Vacations get us out of the normal schedule so it takes a couple days and A LOT of reminders to get kids back on track.
Enjoy your last month of summer! If I can help in any way, please let me know!
